Exterior description and setting

Edwardian terrace of six two and half storey/ two bay dwellings, with decorative bargeboarded dormers to street façade. Built as three pairs stepping down the hill towards the town. They are identical to 69-79 Dublin Rd (HB16/29/024).

Pitched natural slate roofs with terracotta ridge tiles and cast iron rainwater goods with cyma recta moulding resting on bracketed eaves. Red brick chimney with corbel coping to left gable of each property. Façade walls are rendered and lined in cement. Three continuous moulded string courses: above ground floor windows/doors, at first floor cill level, and above first floor/ windows.

All openings are segmantally headed with chamfered reveals. Main windows are 1/1 (originally all sliding sash with horns). Entrance at right of each house. Door is panelled with beaded muntin with transom light above divided vertically into three. Two storey canted window bay to left of door; single window above door. Bays have flat parapeted roofs with gabled dormers above (most now covered over). The latter have a pair of semicircular-headed windows under bracketed bargeboard with quatrefoil panel embellishment. To right (in line with door) is hipped secondary dormer (with terracotta hip finials) with single 2/2 window.

Of the six houses, only nos 53 and 55 retain their original facades.

Setting: front gardens with cement rendered walls and wrought iron gates.

Historical information

Known on the OS maps as South End Terrace. First cited in 1904 Valuation Revision book. Of the six houses, two apparently remained unoccupied until 1908. These houses were erected immediately outside the municipal boundary, presumably to avail of lower rates.
