Exterior description and setting

A three-storey/ two-bay terraced house fronting the south side of Sandys Street.

Pitched natural slate roof. Cement rendered chimney on left gable with projecting coping. Half round metal rainwater goods with downpipe at left. Rainwater goods to rear pitch are plastic.

Walls of street façade are painted line rendered with raised painted base course. Main entrance at right comprises a modern four-panel painted timber door with narrow transom light over. At left is a 2/2 sliding sash window with exposed box. At first and second floors are two identical windows, in line with each other, but not with ground floor openings. All windows have granite cills; those on top floor are diminished in height.

Left gable abutted by a slightly lower building (HB16/28/104A); exposed section of wall is rendered. Right gable abutted by adjoining house (HB16/28/103).

Rear wall is painted cement render. It is abutted at left by a modern two storey return. At ground floor right on main block is a modern timber two-pane casement window. Directly above is an identical window, but timber sheeted on lower half. At second floor is an identical window over the right pitch of return. Over left pitch of return is a smaller two-pane casement window at half landing between first and second floor. Return has an artificial slate pitched roof and cement rendered walls. It has a small modern two-pane casement window to right cheek at first floor. Back gable of return is partially abutted at right by a single storey kitchen extension. This has a pitched artificial slated roof and cement walls. There is a modern picture window on its back wall. Back yard is enclosed to rear by derelict random rubble outhouse.

Historical information

This building is shown on the 1835 OS town map. The first valuation book notes its occupier in 1838 as one William Riddle. It is described in the 1863 second valuation has being 18ft 9in long by 23ft 0in wide by three storeys high. The present building is likely to be the one shown on the 1835 map, and is therefore of earlier date.
