The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Passage opening is segmental headed and has rubble granite piers supporting a soldier course, brick head. There are six modern stone steps down to opening, which is infilled with fixed iron bars. The structure is enclosed by modern railings.
Historical information
Reputedly used to bring prisoners from former gaol in vicinity of present Bank of Ireland for execution on Gallows Hill (now Heather Park). Probably of 18th century in date.
