Exterior description and setting

Three storey (+ attic) building on corner of Hill St and Kildare St. Corner of building is canted.

Pitched, natural slate, roof is hipped to Kildare Street and gabled to Hill Street. Roof has overhanging eaves with decorative rafter tails, terracotta ridges and a terracotta finial to corner. There is a small gable dormer rising from wallhead at canted corner. Dormer is slated with finial and fretted timber bargeboard. Front pitch to Hill Street has a cast iron skylight, and gable to Hill Street has tile skews. Rear pitch has two cast iron skylights.

Walls to both main elevations are lined render; with moulded cill course at first floor. Similar but broader to second floor cill level and moulded cill to dormer window at attic level continuing as a raised painted stringcourse along both facades. At ground floor to both elevations, and wrapping around the corner is a modern shopfront. It consists of a series of boxed pilasters supporting a broad projecting timber fascia incorporating roller shutters and signage.

Main entrance is on canted corner. It is a modern shop door flanked by pilasters. There are seven windows to each upper floor. Two to Kildare street, one on canted corner and four to Hill Street. All windows to façade are 1/1 sliding sash with stop end chamfered render reveals. An illuminated box sign has been attached to the wall at first floor on the canted corner.

Kildare Street gable is abutted by an adjacent lower property, wall above is skewed and is rendered and plain. Hill Street gable is abutted by a lower building, wall above is painted plain render. Rear elevation was not inspected.

Historical information

Shown on 1835 OS map and valued as a house at £17 in 1838 valuation book. Described as three storeys high plus basement in 1863 valuation. Seemingly a shop from mid 19th century.
