Exterior description and setting

Three storey block comprising three properties on east side of Hill Street. Property to right (67a) is on the corner of Hill Street and Margaret Square.

Roof is gabled to left, hipped to right (Margaret Square); natural slate with terracotta ridge tiles. Number 69 has two cast iron skylights to front pitch. Rainwater goods are painted metal.

Walls to both street facades are lined lime render with stepped quoins to corner and projecting eaves course. They also have tie bars between each floor, between 67a and 67b; there is a further tie bar between first and second floors of No 67b, and another below eaves level between 67a and 67b.

Ground floors to both no. 67 and no.69 have modern shop fronts. Ground floor to no 67a is smooth rendered with a raised base course to both elevations. To Hill Street are six unequal segmental headed openings. Five of the openings are windows with fixed panes (part obscured by roller shutter boxes inserted in arch at spring of arch level), with rendered cills and plain stall risers. The third opening from the right is a doorway above is a sign with frieze and cornice. To each property there are two windows to the upper floors on Hill Street façade. These are all 1/1 sliding sashes with granite cills second floor windows to no 69 are unequal sashes suggesting unequal configuration was 6/3. Cill level to no.67a is slightly higher. Those to upper floors are diminished in height with painted granite cills.

On right elevation (to Margaret Square) the wall details are as front elevation. There are five unequal openings to ground floor second opening from left is a door with roller shutter in head of arch, first and fourth openings are windows as those on Hill Street. The third opening are a pair of t+g doors. Fifth opening has an infilled arch head. To upper floors there are four window openings to each floor, the fourth from left having been recently infilled. All remaining are similar in every respect to those on Hill Street elevation, those to extreme right are suffering from subsidence.

Rear, no view can be obtained due to rear additions.

Historical information

This block is shown on the 1835 OS map. The 1838 valuation indicates three homes contained within it. It is described as 3 1/3 storeys high in the 1863 valuation book. The ground floor openings to the corner section are probably original; this part was a licensed shop during the later 19th century.
