Exterior description and setting

Second from right in a terrace of five three-storey/ two-bay houses stepping up Windsor Hill.

Pitched natural slate roof with cement rendered chimney to left gable (tied into gable of adjacent property). Semicircular metal rainwater goods with downpipe to left of facade.

Wall to façade is painted lined render. Three granite steps rise to main entrance at right. Door is modern six panelled stained timber with patterned glass transom over. To left is a single 2/2 exposed-box sliding sash, with horns and painted granite cill. There are two similar windows to each upper floor, all in line with ground floor openings; those to second floor diminished in height.

Left and right gables form party walls with adjacent properties.

Rear is butted at right by long low return, now stripped out and semi derelict. To left is a two-storey return, supported on rendered corner pier so ground floor is open (all in poor condition). Walls to rear elevation are smooth render. At ground floor is a paired 2/4 sliding sash window with central timber mullion and granite cill. At first floor is a 6/6 sash as facade. Between first and second floor at left, and to second floor at right, are 3/6 sash windows.

Return has a mono-pitched natural slate roof. It has a 6/6 sash at first floor.

Yard contains two-storey outhouse. Pitched natural slate roof and random rubble walls (rendered to yard side). To alley, it has a large t+g sheeted timber door to ground floor and a blocked up window at first floor centre. To yard, it has a door to ground floor and sheeted opening to centre. First floor has central opening with vertical bars.

Historical information

Although a building is shown on this site on the 1834 OS map, the present house appears to have been erected, along with the other four in this terrace, sometime between then and 1858, when all are shown on the second edition map. The 1863 Valuation describes the house in its present form. The owner of the terrace is given as Thomas King, and he was probably responsible for its construction.

Second from right in a terrace of five three-storey/ two-bay houses. Its value has been compromised by the work to sub-divide it for flats. Rear outhouse is an integral feature. A large town house, a good example of mid 19th century townscape development and part of an important grouping at a major entry route to Newry.
