Exterior description and setting

A three-storey (+ attic)/ four-bay building fronting east side of Sugar Island.

Pitched natural slate roof with scoped left verge and skylight to front pitch; rendered chimney on left gable. Rainwater gutter contained behind façade parapet.

Wall to facade is painted line render. There is a moulded projecting string course between ground and first floors, with shouldered ends and foliated label stops. A second moulded string course runs between first and second floors. A plain raised eaves course is surmounted by a parapet comprising a series of small two-centre headed openings, each inset with a trefoil, and with a moulded coping over.

There are six openings to ground floor, all with shouldered heads and run-moulded jambs. The third and sixth opening from left each contain a double-leaf door; the former is into the Link Works, and the latter is now disused. Both are five-panelled painted timber and have a two-pane transom light over. The remaining openings contain timber-framed windows, each with two large panes and a smaller opening section over. The windows have steeply chamfered cills and between each of their shouldered heads is a recessed roundel.

At first floor are six equally spaced 1/1 sliding sash windows (with horns). Each has a thin projecting moulded cill and all share a continuous hood mould which drops half way down each top sash. To second floor are six similar windows, diminished in height and with individual hood moulds.

Left and right gables form party walls with adjacent properties.

Rear elevation is abutted by a large gabled random rubble building with profiled metal roof. This structure is much altered and of no interest. Exposed section of wall is rubble stone with three 4/4 sashes windows to each floor, all with granite cills. There is also a three-pane casement on second bay from right between first and second floors.

Historical information

Ascribed to late 18th century in Archaeological Survey Co. Down. Occupied under lease by Francis Carville in 1836 Valuation. Then described as a house, with stores and yard. Shop first cited in 1874 Valuation revision. Archaeological Survey shows floor plan prior to internal refurbishment subsequent to HMBB survey in 1969.

A three-storey (+ attic)/ four-bay building. The façade of this building has been restyled in the later 19th or earlier 20th century, and the interior in the recent past, reflecting its changing use. Its original high quality survives and it remains of special architectural and historic interest.
