Historical information
Opened in 1854 as terminus of Newry & Enniskillen Railway Company’s line from Goraghwood. Intended to link with Enniskillen, but line constructed only as far as Armagh. At Goraghwood, the line crossed the Belfast – Dublin railway. From 1861, Edward Street Station serviced trains to Warrenpoint, and electric trams to Bessbrook from 1885 (with a separate terminus on Upper Edward St). The line and station were taken over by the Great Northern Railway Co in 1879. Complex also included a loco shed, goods shed, and turntable. Operations ceased in 1965.
Described in the 1st HMB survey dated 6/11/1969;
'Derelict buildings of disused G.N.R Dundalk, Newry and Greenore railway with branch to Warrenpoint and Goraghwood. Waiting room and offices are in poor condition and the brick engine shed is roofless. Station platforms are intact. Entrance to former Newry and Bessbrook electric tramway station adjoins.'
