Exterior description and setting

One and a half storey vernacular farmhouse aligned N-S on the S side of Old Newry Road.

Pitched natural slate roof is aligned N-S and has four chimneys – one to each gable and one to either side of central bay. All are corbelled and cement dashed. Half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are cement dashed and smooth rendered to corners and window openings.

Principal elevation faces W. Each bay has a 1/1 exposed box sliding sash window with granite cill. That to right bay is blocked up.

Central bay has an additional wind break porch to the left of the window. Porch has a pitched natural slate roof with decorative bargeboard with central drop finial. Door is t+g sheeted with narrow transom over. Its left and right cheeks are blank.

The right (S) gable of the house has a 2/2 sash window to the attic, set to left of centre.

The openings on the rear (E) elevation are irregularly placed and this elevation is abutted to centre by a lean-to (see later). The left bay has a 1/ 2 sliding sash window to ground floor centre and a 4/2 sash window to left side at attic level. Abutting ground floor is a cement dashed plinth to support a rainwater barrel. Central bay is almost completely abutted by the lean-to. Its exposed left part has a narrow 4/2 sash window at ground floor with a larger 4/2 sash window at attic level. The right bay has a large 2/2 sliding sash window at ground floor (as those on façade). The rear lean-to has a mono-pitched natural slate roof and walls as house. Its left (S) cheek contains a t+g sheeted door. Its rear (E) face has a 2/2 sliding sash window and the right (N) cheek is blank.

Left (N) gable has two 2/2 sash windows in attic gable.

Setting:

House has a small garden to front enclosed to road by a hedge. A ball topped wrought-iron pedestrian gate provides access to the house via a small path. To the S side of the garden is a similar gate into the rear yard. The rear yard is enclosed to S by a two storey rubble stone outbuilding with pitched natural slate roof. All openings are brick dressed and have t+g sheeted doors. Its front (N) elevation has a central gable with t+g loading door flanked by a number of circular vented openings. Modern wrought iron gate with eagle topped piers to road.

Historical information

Shown on the 1834 OS 6" map and described in the 1836 Valuation book as measuring 54ft 6in x 18ft x 12ft. Possibly of late 18th C date. Its value in the 1862 Valuation is £3.10s.0d and this remains unchanged thereafter. However, the valuation is given as two separate parts from 1886 indicating a sub-division of the building.
