Historical information
This building first appears on the 2nd edition OS map giving it a mid 19thC erection date. The HMBB first survey card states “Toll house?” Unfortunately the slide only shows the rear of the building: it is single storey and two bay with hipped natural slate roof with chimney to centre of ridge. Walls are cement rendered with advanced eaves. Rear elevation is abutted to left bay by a lean-to with corrugated iron roof and right bay has a single 1/1 exposed box sliding sash window”.
This house is unlikely to have been a toll house for two reasons. Firstly, tolls had been abandoned by the mid 1800s. Secondly, there is no mention of a projecting canted bay which characterises the front elevation of such houses (as, for example, on the Dromore – Hillsborough section of this road).
