Exterior description and setting

A single storey, two bay (lobby entry) vernacular dwelling aligned roughly E-W with right gable to Chapel Road.

It has a pitched natural slate roof with a red brick chimney to centre and smaller lime rendered one to left gable. Slightly projecting granite eaves course supports half-round metal rainwater goods.

Walls are lime-rendered random rubble. Principal elevation faces S. Set slightly to right of centre is a wind break porch. Its has a natural slate monopitched roof which catslides into front pitch. To its front face is a plain-sheeted timber entrance door. Left and right cheeks are blank. To either side of porch is a window opening, with granite cill and the remains of a side-hung timber casement window.

Left gable has a window opening set to right on apex.

Rear elevation has a 2/2 sliding sash window (without cill) to centre.

Right gable has an infilled opening (now rendered over and only visible inside).

Outbuildings:

1. Opposite the house is a two-storey outbuilding with a one storey outbuilding abutting its left gable (see later). It has a pitched natural slate roof and tiled skews. Walls are lime-rendered granite rubble.

Principal elevation faces N. At left end is a window opening with the remains of a metal frame. Set slightly to left of centre is a door opening with concrete block jambs and timber lintel. To right is an original doorway with timber head. To upper level is a loading door opening set to centre.

Left gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding.

Rear elevation walls are unrendered. There are two small ventilation openings to the lower level. Set to right of centre on first floor is the remains of a panelled timber loading door.

Right gable is abutted by a small single storey outbuilding, ruinous and of no interest.

2. The outbuilding to left gable is detailed as before. Its front (N) face has a wide opening with timber lintel at extreme right end.

Its left gable is blank.

Rear elevation has t+g sheeted door with timber lintel to left.

Right elevation is the gable of the main block.

Setting:

House is enclosed to road by a random rubble stone wall with field stone coping. A pair of wet dashed (square-in-section) gate piers with pyramidal concrete caps supports a wrought-iron gate. Gate consists of five horizontal bars, central vertical one and two diagonal bars, all with twisted tops.

Historical information

No building is shown at this location on the 1835 OS map. It is first depicted on the 1861 edition and is therefore of 19th century date.

Evaluation

A lobby entry vernacular house, retaining much of its original fabric and character. Along with its outbuilding to front, random rubble wall to road, gate piers and wrought-iron gate, it forms an attractive group but is not of special interest.
