Exterior description and setting

Small single-storey/ single-bay neo-classical pavilion at east end of public park.

Flat concrete roof with coped blocking course to front and sides. Walls are painted smooth cement render with an advanced basecourse in a contrasting colour.

Principal elevation faces SW to park. It is symmetrical and five divisions wide. To centre is a semicircular-headed opening containing a pair of modern painted three-panel timber doors. Directly above, applied to the blocking course, is a small pediment. Door is flanked to each side by a pilaster (with fluted frieze and moulded base) supporting a deep moulded cornice within which is a leaded rainwater gutter. To each side of the door are two recessed panels, each with a fixed timber tripartite window – the central pane is 3x4-paned with 1x4 sidelights. Stucco cill and decorative moulded apron panel. To each corner of this elevation is a pilaster detailed as those flanking door.

Left gable is also symmetrical, but only three divisions wide, each separated by a pilaster as front elevation. Central division contains a window in recessed bay as facade, and with advanced pediment applied to blocking course above. The end divisions also have recessed bays containing windows as façade but sidelights are 2/2 (horizontally divided) sliding sash margins.

The rear elevation is smooth cement rendered and unpainted. Ogee metal gutter with downpipe at right. Plastic ventilation flue at left. Three plastic ventilator grilles and smaller metal ones just below eaves.

Right elevation is detailed as that at left, but all openings are blocked and rendered over.

A small utilitarian building retaining much of its original character and one of a number of public buildings within this attractive early 20thC park. See also bandstand (HB16/12/002) and public toilets (HB16/12/029).
