Exterior description and setting

Left one of a pair of three storey / two bay houses on N side of road and facing the sea.

Pitched natural slate roof with tiled verge and a shared chimney between the two houses. Plastic gutters on advanced eaves with downpipe to right.

Front wall is rendered and painted. Left bay is narrower than the right one and contains the main entrance. Modern door with glazed sidelights, are set within a semi-elliptical headed doorway with run-moulded architrave and infilled head. On right bay are two 1/1 uPVC windows with eared stucco architraves and painted cills. There are three similar windows to each upper floor, all in line with ground floor openings. First floor ones have a continuous cill course and run-moulded architraves with bracketed entablatures. Those to second floor are diminished in height and have architraves only.

Left gable is abutted by a flush wall with carriageway; filling space between this gable and the adjacent house HB16/12/016B. Wall is two-and-a-half storey in height, and is rendered and painted as façade.

Rear elevation was not inspected.

Right gable is party wall with 22 Seaview (HB16/12/018B).

Front garden has a hedge to street.

Historical information

One of a pair of houses (along with HB 16/12/018B) which are first shown on the 1859 OS 6” map (but not on the 1834 edition), indicating a mid 19th C erection date. Known as ‘Wyndham Terrace’, it is described in the 1861 Valuation book as measuring 9.5yds x 11.5yds x 3 storeys.

Evaluation

One of a pair of three storey houses on Seaview. Although they retain their attractive stucco architraves, their windows and doors are replaced and their over-all character degraded.
