Exterior description and setting
Situated on the verge on N side of the dual carriageway between Warrenpoint and Newry, just W of entrance to Narrow Water Castle.
A finely dressed granite post with pyramidal top. Measures 30cm square in cross section and now stands 55cm above the ground. The figure '4' is incised (18cm high) on the three sides which face the road (this being the distance in Irish miles from Newry).
Historical information
Not shown on any edition of the OS 6” map. However, the fact that the measurement (denoting distance from Newry) is in Irish miles suggests that it is probably of early 19th century date. Mile stones are depicted at these locations on Taylor & Skinner's 1777 Maps of the Roads of Ireland.

Prominent roadside location, and one of some 20 such milestones which still survive (out of a total of 24) between Newry and Newcastle. No such grouping of milestones has yet been recorded anywhere else in N. Ireland.
