Exterior description and setting

Two storey shop set in a terrace on N side of Church Street.

Pitched natural slate roof with rendered chimney to right end and tiled skews. Raised eaves course supports half-round metal rainwater goods.

Front elevation is two windows wide. Walls are lined rendered and painted with stepped V-channelled stucco quoins to first floor. At ground floor right is a modern four-panelled door with plain transom. The rest of the ground floor is filled by a modern shop front. There are broad modern timber pilasters with original stucco curvilinear consoles to either end of the elevation and between the door and shop front. The consoles support a moulded stucco cornice which is also the first floor cill course. Modern reproduction shop front (all in stained timber), has flush fascia and a wide central recessed doorway, and large modern windows to left and right. There are two first floor windows, both with a modern stained timber frames with side-hung casements, and moulded stucco architraves.

Both gables are abutted by adjoining buildings.

Historical information

Shown on the 1834 Valuation town plan and described in the 1835 Valuation as measuring 25ft6in x 30ft x 19ft6in. Similar dimensions given in 1863 Valuation book, suggesting the same building. No significant changes to rateable valuation thereafter although a Valuation entry notes it as "improved" in 1873.

HMBB first survey card states, “c1864. A two-storey building, shopped on ground floor, rendered above with raised quoins. Three light windows with top openers are enclosed in square moulded architraves. Panelled pilasters rise to architrave blocks and channelled consoles supporting cornice. Panelled street door. Three windows wide.”

The HMBB first survey slide shows the original shop front to have a moulded basecourse and panelled stucco pilasters on moulded bases. There are two additional pilasters to centre of shop front framing its doors. Shop windows are single panes in painted timber frames. Shop is painted yellow with details picked out in light blue. Awning obscures the fascia.
