Exterior description and setting

Much altered one and half storey / three bay former lodge with outbuildings on E side of Warrenpoint Road. House has pitched natural slate roof with overhanging boxed eaves and decorative wavy bargeboards. Single cement rendered chimney to left of centre. Plastic rainwater goods.

Front elevation faces W to road. To its centre is a small porch under a pitched natural slate roof (tied into main roof) with bargeboard as others. Walls are painted cement dash with smooth render basecourse. Glazed timber front door is modern, and all windows are modern stained timber fixed lights with top hung transoms and concrete cills. Left and right bays of front elevation each have a single window.

Left gable has a window to each floor. Rear elevation is much altered and all modern. Right gable is abutted by a modern extension.

To rear of house is a yard enclosed to rear and left by unpainted rubble stone outbuildings (one and two storeys high) with natural slate roofs. Yard is accessed through gateway on left side (all of no interest).

Historical information

This was the gate lodge to Greenwood Park, residence of Ross Thompson in the early 19th C. A building, probably this one, is shown here on the 1834 OS 6” map. Dean states that it was built after Thompson’s death sometime before 1835. Associated with the mock castle (HB16/10/001), gate screen (HB16/10/024) and gardener’s house (HB16/10/030).

Evaluation

One of the few remaining buildings associated with Greenwood Park, but it has been much altered and retains little of architectural interest.
