Exterior description and setting

A three-storey/ double-pile warehouse opposite church (HB16/08/012).

Pitched natural slate roof with tiled verges. Smooth cement-rendered walls over random rubble granite walls.

The north elevation, comprising the two gables, has symmetrically arranged openings. Left pile has a painted t+g sliding door to G/F and a smaller t+g loading door to each upper floor. A pulley beam projects from the head of the S/F door. To left of both upper doors is a metal casement window (that to F/F sheeted over). Right bay similarly detailed but mirror image. Its G/F door is boarded over and the doors to upper floors are in two halves. Pulley beam at top now removed. A metal gutter from left elevation crosses the gable between F/F and S/F. A second gutter runs from the roof valley across the gable of the right pile. Both gutters discharge into a down pipe on the right elevation.

Left (E) elevation abutted to G/F and F/F by a wet-dashed monopitched shed belonging to Stewart & James; of no special interest. The S/F of the main block has a metal casement window.

Rear (S) elevation has, to left pile, a window to G/F right and to F/F left, and two windows to S/F. Right pile has two windows to each upper floor. All are metal framed.

Right (W) elevation is abutted to G/F by a modern building. Door at G/F middle is a modern insert. Each upper floor has three equally spaced metal casements.

Historical information

This block first appears in the Valuation revision book entry of 1907. Then belonged to David Adams and used as stores. Used by Messrs Dalgetty as a meal store until 1985.

This warehouse makes a significant contribution to the streetscape and is a reminder of Rathfriland’s former commercial importance to the local farming community.
