Exterior description and setting

Pair of small early 20thC two storey / two bay urban vernacular shops set in a terrace on W side of Downpatrick Street.

Each shares a common pitched roof: that to right (No.13) has artificial slates and that to left (No.15) has natural slates. Both have advanced eaves courses supporting half round gutters (metal to left, plastic to right) with a central shared cast iron downpipe. Cement rendered chimney on party wall. A modern flue breaks the ridge at centre of right roof. Both have painted and lined rendered walls.

1. No 15 (left two bays on front elevation).

Painted basecourse. Left bay at ground floor is filled by a semi-elliptical headed coachway to rear. Right bay has entrance and a shop front. Door on its left side is sheeted with six (3x2) small glazed panes to top. At right is a modern (post-WW2) 1/1 top-hung casement window without cill. Wall over is painted with “J.Turley / Gents Hairdresser”. Above is a traditional red and white striped barber’s sign. There is a 2/2 vertically divided sash window (with horns) and exposed boxes to each first floor bay; both have painted granite cills. Coachway to rear is smooth cement rendered.

Left gable of No.15 is abutted by a higher building. Right gable is party wall with No.13.

Rear elevation has smooth cement rendered walls, with a single t+g sheeted door to left at ground floor. Vehicle arch to right. First floor blank.

2. No.13 (right two bays).

At ground floor of left bay are two modern 1/1 top hung casement windows without cills. At right bay is the entrance and a shop front. Door to its left side is glazed 3x5 paned and inset with rendered left reveal and canted and glazed right reveal which continues to right as the large fixed shop window. Over, to centre only, (half the width of the shop front), is a plain timber fascia which obscures the cill of the first floor right window. There is a single 2/2 vertically divided exposed box sliding sash to each first floor bay. Left one has a painted granite cill.

Left gable of No.13 forms party wall with No.15.

Rear elevation has unpainted cement rendered wall. It is abutted to centre by a single storey lean-to. To its left is a sheeted door with glazed top panels. To its right is a modern timber window with extractor vent. There are two first floor windows, in line with ground floor openings; each is a 4/4 exposed box sliding sash (with horns); with no cills. The lean-to has a corrugated asbestos roof. Walls are as main block. It has a louvred door on left cheek and a louvred vents on rear and right cheeks.

Right gable of No.13 is abutted by a larger building.

Historical information

Valuation revision book first notes this pair of houses in entry of 1917. They replaced three earlier houses on this plot.
