The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
A finely-dressed granite post with pyramidal top in vegetated bank on left side of road (travelling west), west of junction with Ballyardle Rd. Projects c.35cm above ground and measures 30cm square in cross section. The figure 13 is incised 15cm high on three faces: that towards Kilkeel is blank.
Two observations suggest that this particular stone has been relocated. First, it is one of the few situated on the seaward side of the road. Second, all the other in situ stones have the mileage on the three faces which are visible from the road. In this instance, one of the numbers is on the back side of the post. It may have been shifted from the opposite side of the road and inadvertently turned through 90 degrees when the boundary wall around Mourne Park was constructed.
Historical information
Not shown on any edition of the OS 6” map from 1834 onwards. However, the fact that the measurement (denoting distance from Newry) is in Irish miles suggests that it is probably of early 19th century date.
