The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Remains of substantial late 19th century lime kiln on south side of road. Cut into north slope of a low hill, thus giving direct access to single pot, now infilled. Façade comprises a random rubble wall coped with concrete. The draw hole is now buried under recent earth fill, leaving only c.3m of walling exposed. The left side of this wall has cracked and is moving forward.
Historical information
First cited in the 1888 valuation book as belonging to Henry McIlroy. Shown on the 1901 and 1919 OS 6” maps. The 1920 valuation entry notes it as in ruins. Judging by its size and location, this kiln was probably used for the commercial production of burnt lime brought from quarries at Carlingford, as opposed to the more common usage hereabouts by groups of farmers.

Evaluation
This kiln is larger and its pot more easily accessed than the more common and earlier field kilns, many of which still survive in Mourne.
