Exterior description and setting
One and a half storey boathouse aligned N/S (sea to south) to the east of lighthouse keepers’ houses (HB16/04/013A & B).
Pitched natural slate roof, raised cement coped verges with moulded granite kneelers. Three course corbelled yellow brick eaves (middle one saw-toothed). Cast iron ogee downpipes (one to left and right elevations) have poppy head wall clasps and decorative ogee hoppers. Smooth cement rendered walls with advanced basecourse to all but front elevation.
Front gable (sea facing) has a pair of framed and sheeted doors with wicket inset to right. This is set within a segmental headed stepped brick dressing. To right of door, set into wall, is a cast iron door catch. In gable above is a sheeted, segmental headed loading door with granite cill, over is an infilled occulus vent and a wrought iron bracket, from which is suspended a metal hook.
Left elevation has three openings. At left end two granite steps rise to a segmental headed framed sheeted door. Remaining two openings are 3/3 segmental headed sliding sash windows with horns, wrought security bars over and granite cills.
Right elevation is blank.
Rear gable has a single 3/3 window on ground floor (detailed as others to ground floor ), and a similarly detailed 6/6 to first floor with pierced sheet metal vent in apex.
Across the road, at head of beach, the verge has been levelled to allow boats to pass smoothly onto the beach.
Historical information
Erected by the Commissioners of Irish Lights along with the adjoining houses (HB16/04/014 A & B). Used from 1889 or shortly before. Associated with Haulbowline Lighthouse (HB16/04/009).
