Exterior description and setting
A one-storey/ single-bay building at the south-east corner of the inner harbour.
Pitched natural slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles. Half-round plastic gutters affixed to painted timber eaves boards. Walls of roughly squared granite rubble brought to courses and strap pointed. Stepped quoins, and dressings to openings are of finely-dressed granite.
Principal gable faces east to slipway on opposite side of road which passes in front of building. At centre of this elevation is a large painted t+g double-leaf door set in a segmental-headed opening; it has a wicket gate in its right-hand leaf. A flagpole is affixed to the right side of the gable.
The left elevation is blank except for a segmental-headed painted timber fixed-pane window at centre; stooled cill. There is a small ventilator in the wall underneath. Plastic downpipe at front (right) end.
The rear gable is blank.
The right elevation is as left. In addition, there is, at extreme right, a small flight of concrete steps up to adjacent oil storage tanks.
The slipway is of mass concrete and is revetted along its north side by metal pile sheeting.
Historical information
Erected c.1904 as a boathouse in connection with nearby Coastguard station (HB16/03/008). It was acquired by the RNLI in June 1986 and used to house their newly acquired D-class lifeboat. When a new, larger, boat was acquired in December 1992, a new lifeboat station was built on the opposite side of the harbour. This building was henceforth used as a souvenir and fund-raising shop.

Evaluation
A modestly scaled, yet well executed, building functionally associated with the nearby listed coastguard station. Reflects changing role of coastguard from prevention of smuggling to sea rescue, a particularly important role in this fishing community.
