Exterior description and setting
Located in graveyard to south east of church, at left on approach from Greencastle St.
Single one-piece finely-dressed, octagonal granite pedestal on a square concrete base over three roughly dressed granite paving slabs. Surmounted by a bronze dial complete with gnomon. The face is inscribed with the eight cardinal compass points (foliated) and Roman numerals to outer dial. Its outer edge at top is inscribed ‘The gift of Robt Wallace, Newry, to the dissenting congregation of Kerkeel in Mourne. The Rev. M […] minister’ Its outer edge at bottom is inscribed ‘Made by G. Adams, […], London […] makers to his highness the Prince of Wales’
Historical information
Presented to the congregation in 1757 by Robert Wallace, a Newry merchant, probably as a memorial to his father, Rev. Charles Wallace. Relocated at least twice, it is now near its original position.
