Exterior description and setting

A terrace of three houses aligned north-south on the east side of Mountain Road. No.28, at the south end, is HB16/03/009A, No.30 is HB16/03/009B, and No.32, at the north end, is HB16/03/009C. Because of the topography they appear to be two storey from the road, but are in fact three storey, the semi-basement being accessible from the rear.

The present terrace is six opening wide and comprises two phases. The original building comprises the three openings at right. The three-opening wide block at left was subsequently added. At the same time, the left opening of the original house was amalgamated with the right hand opening of the addition to form what is now No.30. The two left openings of the addition form No.32.

All roofs have pitched natural slate roofs, with overhangs to gables finished with plain bargeboards. Rendered chimneys on both exposed gables, and also on what was the left gable of the original house (before additions to north). Half-round plastic gutters. All walls are painted and rendered, with projecting eaves course to which is affixed shallow board

For the purposes of describing the terrace, each phase is described as they each form a distinct architectural unit. In this case both blocks are described because No 30 includes parts of both. (see also HB16/03/009A & HB16/03/009C.)

The walls are lined smooth render.

1. Right hand block (part of no.30 and no.28)

Three bays (here three openings) wide - No.30 occupies left bay, and No.28 right two bays. This block is delineated by stucco quoins at both ends. Entrance door from street (to no.28) is at centre and is painted four-panel timber set in a modern painted timber pedimented encasement. To left of door is a 6/6 painted timber sliding sash. To right is a modern shallow bow window with multi-pane timber casements. At first floor are three equally spaced 6/6 timber sashes in line with those below. All sash windows have exposed boxes and painted granite cills.

2. Left hand block (No.32 and part of No.30)

Three bays (here three openings) wide - No.32 occupies left two bays, and No.30 the right bay. Entrance door to No.30, at right, is four panel painted timber with transom light over. Set within a shallow projecting porch with decorative fretted cheeks, pitched roof and timber finial. Above is a 2/2 sliding sash detailed as right-hand block.

The division into three houses is more evident on this elevation.

At basement right is back door similar to no.28, with a similar modern 1/1 plastic window to its left. At ground floor is a 6/3 sash at left, and 2/2 sash at right. At first floor is a 1/ 2 casement at left, and 1/1 sash at right.

Historical information

Not on the 1859 OS 6” map. Depicted on the 1901 edition, indicating construction during second half of 19th century.
