Exterior description and setting

A terrace of eight two-storey/ two and three bay houses on north east side of Mountain Road, now much altered. The terrace steps up between no.12 and no.14.

All roofs are pitched and have artificial slates, except No.16, which has natural slates. Nos 6 -14 have skylights to front; No.16 has two dormers. Half-round metal and plastic rainwater goods. Walls are modern wet dashed, except Nos 6 and 14 which are smooth rendered. Semi-elliptical coach arch at right on No 6. All windows are modern top-hung timber casements and all doors are also modern.

Historical information

1834 OS 6” map shows buildings where Nos 2, 4 and 6 now stand. Described as exempt in 1834 valuation, suggesting that they were probably one-storey thatched houses. The remainder of this terrace was subsequently erected – first No 8 (in 1874), then Nos 10 and 12 (1877), and finally 14 and 16 (1887). The original houses were probably heightened or rebuilt during this period.

The original HMBB survey card, dated May 1970, states that these properties retained their sliding sash windows and five of the eight doors were modern.
