Exterior description and setting

Right one of seven three storey/ two bay late 19th houses on N side of Bridge Street. The broad right elevation of this property fronts onto Watsons Street.

Pitched natural slate roof, hipped to E (right) end, with paired corbels to overhanging timber eaves. There are two chimneys on ridge of rear return. Walls are painted brick with stepped brick quoins to corner with Watson Street.

Front elevation faces S to Bridge Street and is two windows wide to its upper floors. All windows have slightly advanced brick architraves and masonry cills. All windows are 2/2 (horizontally divided) sliding sashes with horns. Ground floor of front elevation has a modern shop front (of no interest) set between original stucco shop-front cornice and fascia end corbels.

Right (E) elevation (to Watsons Street) is five openings wide to its upper floors. The Bridge Street shop front wraps around the right corner and fills its left end. At ground floor right is a segmental headed carriageway, and on the remainder of ground floor (not in line with the first floor openings) is a doorway (at left) and two infilled window openings.

Left (W) gable abuts adjacent property (HB14/12/004F).

Rear (N) elevation has a full height return with half-hipped roof, the left cheek of which forms part of the E elevation of the main block. Its right cheek has a carriageway at ground floor left. At ground floor right it is abutted by the rear extension of no.119. At first and second floor left are modern timber escape doors and at first and second floor right there are single window openings, that to first floor is 1/1 sash and the second floor one is a 2/2 (horizontally divided) sash. The centre of the elevation is abutted by a large metal flue pipe and the doors to left are served by a large modern metal escape stair.

End wall of rear return is rendered and blank.

Historical information

UAHS state that this terrace was erected c1840 but it does not appear on the 1862 OS map. Architectural detailing would suggest it was erected in the late 19thC. The HMBB first survey slide shows this building to have modern windows. The HMBB first survey card states that these properties originally had slated roofs, brick walls with contrasting brick dressings to sash windows.

This building, one of seven in a terrace, has no features of architectural or historic interest. Although its interior was not fully inspected, other original interiors in group are of little interest.
