Exterior description and setting

Site – to the southeast of [?] Road, roughly one mile west of Portadown- formerly occupied by a substantial pre 1835 two-storey house, demolished c.1982 with new house now in place.

The first survey of July 1978 reads:
‘Two-storey, three-bay. Slated with jamb wall chimneys. Georgian glazed windows. Central door with full door case’.

Historical information

A long building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1835. In the contemporary valuation the property is recorded as a relatively old ‘dwelling and shop’ occupied by a Ralph Bullock, with the main (slated) building measuring 57½ft x 24 x 14½, a slated ‘addition’ of 16½ x 17 x 9 and two old thatched outbuildings of 77 x 19½ x 7½ and 58 x 19 x 6½, with the whole collection rated at £9-8-0. The property is marked on the revised OS map of 1860 as ‘Mountain View’ with similar dimensions quoted in the second valuation of 1861. However, by this stage another 1½ storey return of 4yrds x 5 had been added to the house, with a number of new single and two-storey outbuildings (some slated, some thatched) also added to the site.

The Bullock family remained at Mountain View until 1904, when the lease was acquired (or passed to) a William Templeton. By this point the property was simply a private residence, an entry of 1884 in the valuation book declaring, ‘no shop here now’. William Templeton was still listed as resident up until at least 1929.

The first survey of July 1978 tells us that the property was ‘a derelict store’ by that date. The house was demolished (according to a current resident) to make way for the present new dwelling in c.1982.

A note on the first survey report states that the property once contained a licensed public house, presumably the ‘shop’ referred to in the 1830s valuation.
