The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Site, on the west side of Charlestown Road roughly one mile N/NW of Portadown, formerly occupied by a single-storey vernacular house of pre 1861 construction, demolished post 1974 with new dwelling now in place.
In the first survey report of September 1974 the building was described as:
‘Single-storey cottage set below road level. Roof thatched, gable ends. Chimneys rendered. Walls rendered and whitewashed. East front has six drop-hung [i.e. sash] windows, [with] no astragals but one with vertical astragals. Projecting porch between windows two and three, [with] slate shed roof under thatch eaves. Door flush panel. Condition fair. Front about 58ft’.
Historical information
A building, matching that standing until recent years, is shown on this site on the revised OS map of 1860. The valuation returns of the following year state that the structure in question was indeed a dwelling, then occupied by a John Conlon, with John Irwin, (the occupant of nearby Carn House), the immediate lessor and the rateable value a modest 15/-.
Ownership of the property passed to the Bank of Ireland in 1895, from who the Conlon family acquired the freehold in 1907. A James Conlon was still in residence in 1929. When surveyed in September 1974 a George Connolly was recorded as the occupier. The house appears to have been demolished c.1985.
