Exterior description and setting

A single storey three bay direct entry house with whitened exposed stone walls and with a thatched roof between cement skews. The house faces north-west overlooking the road that travels about three miles in a south-easterly direction from Tempo to meet the Enniskillen/Fivemiletown road

A plain rendered chimneystack rises right of centre over the position of the original kitchen hearth. A metal flue projects from the stack to serve a stove below. The timber sheeted entrance door with glazed panel divided into two vertically is flanked to the left (north-east) by one and to the right by two vertically sliding windows with the sashes divided into two vertically. The sash stops are curved and sills are of traditional depths. There is a similar window in the left-hand gable and another at the rear lighting the former kitchen. The bedroom at the left-hand (south-west) end of the house has a four square casement window in the rear wall that lacks a sill. There is a passageway between the house and the kitchen and toilet accommodation at the rear. An access lobby between the two has timber ledged and sheeted doors on either side. The construction of the units at the rear is unsubstantial with thin walls, corrugated roofs and modern windows.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the 1834 OS map, however its orientation is slightly different than that shown on the revised map of 1856, (which is the same as that we see today), suggesting that the present house was built between these dates. The buildings at the rear of the dwelling are not shown on either map. The property is noted in the second valuation as the home of a James Crawford, with Sir V.A. Brooke the lessor and the rateable value 15/-.

A major scheme of repair was carried out in 1999.

Evaluation

A single storey three bay direct entry thatched house with whitened stone walls. The building has been restored to the original appearance and stabilised by means of a reinforced concrete ring beam before replacement of the roof structure in traditional style followed by re-thatching. While the structures to the rear detract somewhat from the character of the house, it is a good example of a small vernacular building that has been sensitively restored
