Exterior description and setting

A T-plan two-storey/ three bay house aligned E-W and set within maturely planted grounds with farmyard to rear.

Hipped natural slate roof with three yellow brick chimneys - one between each bay of main block; the third to the rear return - all with octagonal terracotta pots. Cement rendered eaves course carries half-round metal rainwater goods.

Principal elevation faces S. Walls are cement-rendered with stepped stucco quoins over a basecourse. To centre is an entrance porch detailed as house with decorative timber bargeboards and blocked cornice. It left cheek has a modern stained timber six-panelled door; the front face and right cheek each have a semicircular-headed 1/1 sliding sash window with stone cill. Each end bay has a 1/1 margin-paned sliding sash window with moulded architrave and stone cill. Aligned above are three similar windows.

Left (W) and right (E) elevations each have two windows to each floor – all are 1/1 margin-paned windows with stone cills. Those to set to the right of the E cheek are not margin-paned and are narrower.

The rear elevation is almost completely abutted by a two-storey return; the exposed sections are blank. The right (W) face of the return has a two windows (as before) to each floor. The rear gable has a 2x4 metal-framed window to first floor left. The left (E) cheek is abutted by a two-storey stairwell return and a later one-and-a-half storey addition. Both are detailed as main block and the exposed sections are blank. The stairwell return has a tall semicircular-headed 1/1 sliding sash window with coloured margins to left and a 1/1 sliding sash window to its right. The addition had a pitched natural slate roof but has now been altered to a mansard-type. Its rear face has a t+g sheeted door to right and a 2x4 metal-framed window to its left; aligned above to first floor is a similar window. The left cheek has a similar window.

Historical information

This house was erected about 1881. It is first cited in the Valuation revision book entry for this year, being described as a Caretaker's house valued at £20. It is cited as Carrigans House in the 1907 OS 6" map.
