Exterior description and setting

A much altered two storey / three bay house aligned NE-SW at the SE of Kilturk West Townland.

Pitched artificial slate roof with raised cement skews. There are two yellow brick chimneys with moulded brick copings, one to party wall between each bay. Advanced concrete eaves support plastic rainwater goods. Walls are harled with stepped cement rendered quoins and base course. Windows are 2/2 top-hung uPVC casements with concrete cills.

Principal elevation faces SE. Central entrance is contained in a shallow semi-elliptical reveal with reeded cast cement pilasters supporting a cast moulded keyblocked head. It consists of a four panelled timber door with decorative glazed sidelights and spiderweb fanlight. To either side is a window. Aligned above ground floor openings are three windows.

Left gable has a canted bay to ground floor centre. It has a hipped artificial slate roof and a window to all three sides (that to centre is larger). First floor has a window to centre.

Rear elevation is completely abutted at left bay (and left side of central bay) by a full height return. The remaining section is abutted to ground floor only by a single storey addition (see later). Exposed section has a window to first floor set at right. Return is detailed as house with a chimney (as before) to exposed gable. Gable has a window to each floor set at left. Left cheek has two windows to each floor. Right cheek is abutted to ground floor by the addition and has a window to first floor. The addition has a monopitched artificial slate roof. Rear face has a modern timber door to right of centre and two windows, one to extreme right end and one to left of centre. Exposed right end is blank.

Right gable is blank.

Setting:
The house is set perpendicular to the road. There are two single storey outbuildings, one to rear and one on the opposite side of the road. Both have been extensively refurbished.

Historical information

A building is shown here on the 1834 OS 6" map. It is described in the 1835 first Valuation book as a house occupied by Robert Liddell and measuring 47ft x 24ft x 16ft. These dimensions appear to be commensurate with the present building. It is probably of earlier 19th century date.
