Exterior description and setting

A symmetrical one-and-a-half storey / three bay house aligned W-E on the W side of Annashanco Townland.

Pitched natural slate roof with fleur-de-lys ridge-crestings and tiled skews. There is a red brick chimney at party wall between each bay and a cast-iron skylight to rear pitch. Half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are lime-rendered over rubble stone. All cills are stone.

Principal elevation faces S. To centre is a large slightly segmental-headed opening. To either side is a large window opening.

Left gable has a window opening with the remains of an 8/8 sliding sash window to apex.

Rear elevation has a window opening to right and left bays (that to right has the remains of a 6/6 sliding sash). Central bay has a timber-sheeted door with three-part transom over to left and a window to right containing the remains of an 8/8 sliding sash.

Right gable has a 3/6 sliding sash window to apex.

Setting:
The house occupies a pleasant elevated site, surrounded by mature trees and overlooking Spring Grove Forest. It lies within the Forestry Division boundary and therefore vehicular access is prohibited.

Historical information

The valuation revision book indicates that, although there had been a house at this location from c.1860, it took its present form in 1898 (when its valuation increases from 15s.0d to £3).

Evaluation

A pleasantly sited and interesting house with unusually large openings to façade. Unfortunately most of the original features are now gone, but the dimensions of the house are of some interest.
