Exterior description and setting

Detached three-bay single-storey with attic-storey rendered house, built c.1900. Rectangular on plan, facing north with lean-to return and series of stone outbuildings to the west.
Half-hipped natural slate roof, pair of redbrick chimneystacks with clay pots and terracotta ridge tiles. Plastic rainwater goods to timber fascia. Pebbledash cement render walling. Square-headed window openings, projecting cement reveals, concrete sills and single-pane timber sliding sash windows with margin lights to upper sash and ogee horns.

Symmetrical three-bay front elevation with central elliptical-headed door opening having projecting cement render surround, vertically-sheeted timber door flanked by sidelights over diagonally-sheeted timber panels and elliptical overlight. Door opens onto concrete step to front area.

Two-bay east side elevation with pair of small square-headed window openings to the attic storey having multi-pane steel casement windows.

Rear south elevation has two window openings with the west end obscured by a later lean-to return having a timber sheeted door with sidelights and a further window opening with steel casement window. Door opens onto concrete step to concrete paved rear area.

West side elevation has a pair of diminutive window openings to the attic storey with steel casement windows.

Setting:-
Single and two-storey rubble stone outbuildings to rear of rear extension extending to the west with corrugated iron and natural slate roofs and some timber plank doors, forming an informal farm yard.

Historical information

The building is first shown on the third edition OS map of 1906. Although there is a building on the site prior to this, the current building can be dated stylistically to c.1900. An outbuilding to the north west appears to be present on the second edition (1854). Further outbuildings to the west appear to also be present on the third edition.

Griffith’s Valuation of 1858 records a ‘house, offices and land’, occupied by Patrick Mc Nulty and leased from Sir William McMahon. The building valuation is £2.10s, however, this is likely to refer to a previous house. Valuation Revisions do not record the building of the new house c.1900.

Evaluation

Detached three-bay single-storey with attic-storey rendered house, built c.1900. Rectangular on plan, facing north with lean-to return and series of stone outbuildings to the west. The modest residence retains most of its original features and together with its attendant outbuildings, represents a small rural group that was common hereabouts. However, it is of a late date and not one of the best examples of the type.
