Exterior description and setting

A detached three-bay direct-entry singe-storey with attic-storey, thatched house, built c.1860, with cellar to west, located on the east side of Killymore Road. Rectangular on plan, facing north with lean-to windbreaker porch and rear outshot to west.

Pitched thatched roof, collapsed to east end with corrugated iron covering to west end. Pair of rendered stone and brick chimneystacks, rainwater goods removed with iron drive-through brackets in situ. Walling is rough-cast lime render over rubble stone. Windows are square-headed with cut stone sills and single-pane timber sliding sashes (unless otherwise stated).

Principal (north) elevation is three windows wide with an off-centre windbreaker entrance porch having lean-to concrete roof and vertically sheeted timber door. Below west bay is a square-headed cellar entrance accessed by stone steps with stone abutments and timber panelled door.

East gable has collapsed, remainder is random rubble stone.

Rear (south) elevation is blank with lime rendered outshot to west having a projecting eaves course with iron drive-through brackets. Painted concrete block walling to centre with a section of cast-iron guttering on iron drive-through brackets, while the east end is collapsed rubble stone.

West gable (of extended bay) has pair of diminutive window openings to attic level with timber casement windows, remainder is blank.

Setting:-
The house is situated on an elevated site with mature trees to front and rear.

Historical information

The building first appears on the first edition OS map of 1833.

A building on the site is listed in Griffith’s Valuation as occupied by Robert Galbraith and leased from Major A W Cole Hamilton. The value is £1.10s. The Galbraith family remain in occupation throughout the period of Annual Revisions (1860-1929) and there are minor changes in value in 1883 and 1911. Robert Galbraith owns it in fee in 1909.

Evaluation

A detached three-bay singe-storey with attic-storey, direct-entry vernacular thatched house in a ruinous state. The house retains some original internal features and part of an unhewn thatched roof structure. Unusually for a vernacular building of this type, the house includes a cellar to its west end. However, although having some interesting features, insufficient fabric survives to merit listing.
