The Department's description

Exterior description and setting

A fountain with a plain shaped fluted column, a lions mouth spout and an acorn finial. The column is inscribed 'Glenfield & Kennedy Ld, Kilmarnock'. Sited in a prominent roadside location.

Historical information

Several Pumps are cited in the village on the 1906 and 1937 OS 25 inch maps (PRONI Ref OS 10/6/44/5/1 and 2), but none at this location. It is therefore concluded that this one was installed after 1936. Further particulars in the EHS Report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland : A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, January 1997, Pump no. 75.
