Exterior description and setting

A single-span road bridge, built c.1840, carrying Greenmount Road over Eskragh Water. Coursed rubble walling to parapets and spandrels with segmental stone coping. Single segmental-headed arch with sandstone voussoirs; torus moulded string course at carriage level; arch soffit is ashlar sandstone. Abutments have been refaced with squared-and-snecked rubble and contain loopholes and two shallow recessed panels at north and south of east abutment containing exposed culvert arches to east.

The carriageway is approximately 6m wide. Parapet wall continues beyond bridge at east to form boundary wall to surrounding agricultural land at north and south.

Historical information

The bridge first appears on the second edition ordnance survey map of 1852 captioned ‘Ballyhushey Bridge’. The first edition (1833) shows neither road nor bridge on the site.

Evaluation

A single-span bridge, built c.1845, carrying Greenmount Road over Eskragh Water. The original character of the structure remains largely intact with much of the original stonework and detailing remaining largely unaltered with exception of some refacing to east abutments. However, it is a minor example of the type and not among the best.
