Exterior description and setting

Detached single-cell single-storey (with loft) direct-entry vernacular dwelling, dated 1827, located on east side of Tattyreagh Road. Rectangular-on-plan.

Roof is pitched natural slate with blue/black clay ridge tiles; rendered chimney with concrete coping. Walls are of whitened rubble over painted plinth. Windows are replacement timber-framed 2/2 sliding sashes supported by painted timber lintels.

Principal elevation faces east and contains, from left a paired sash window, at centre a single windowand at right by vertically-sheeted timber half-door accessed by concrete step and at left by .

South gable is blank.

West elevation contains two windows.

North gable contains single window to loft, offset to left of centre and a datestonelow down, inscribed ‘BUILT 1827 BY ARTHUR CAMPBELL’.

The building appears to have been recently restored, including replacement of windows, roof and chimney.

Setting

Set within private grounds to south of large house (built c.2000); access to rear at north through wrought-iron gate supported on circular rubble pier; recent rubble walling at north continues to form parapet wall of bridge to north-west.

Historical information

The house bears a datestone inscribed "Built 1827 by Arthur Campbell".

The house is present on the first edition OS map of 1833. The Townland Valuation (1835) lists a dwelling, barn and office occupied by Arthur Campbell and valued at £2.18s.3d. Dimensions are given. In Griffith’s valuation (1856-64) the house is occupied by Thomas Campbell and leased from Patrick Kelly. It is valued at £1.5s, together with outbuildings. The value is reduced to 10s in 1892. In 1907 Henry Campbell becomes the occupier in fee.

Evaluation

A detached single-cell single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling, dated 1827, located to east side of Tattyreagh Road. This simple building is well-maintained and retains original features such as wall-hearth and datestone. It is distinctly vernacular in style with simple construction and materials: built in stone with pitched roof, probably thatched originally, although now slated. The direct-entry plan has wall-hearth to south end. The survival of a small house is unusual and it is a good example of a type that is now very rare in original form.
