Exterior description and setting

A single-span road bridge, built c.1820, carrying Sloughan Road over The Black Water at Sloughan Glen. Squared-and-snecked rockfaced granite abutments and spandrels; replacement concrete parapets are roughcast to carriageway; square drainage channels to north and south. Single segmental-headed arch with dressed rockfaced voussoirs. Arch soffit is squared-and-snecked granite.

The carriageway is approximately 5m wide, carrying road over glen with river beneath.

Setting

Steep riverbank bounded at all sides by timber fence; at north-west, access to pedestrian path leading to waterfall at west.

Historical information

The bridge can be seen on the first edition OS map of 1833 crossing Sloughan Glen. The area surrounding it is dotted with both active and ruined corn kilns. The bridge remains uncaptioned throughout the first four editions.

Evaluation

A single-span road bridge, built c.1820, carrying Sloughan Road over The Black Water at Sloughan Glen. The bridge appears to have been well constructed and designed for the challenge of this deep glen and shows engineering merit. The structure has been repaired in recent years, including replacement parapet and this has compromised its interest. It is a relatively common type and not among the best examples.
