Exterior description and setting

Detached multi-bay two-storey outbuilding (single-storey at first floor to rear due to topography of site), built c.1850, located to the west side of Mullagh Road. Rectangular-on-plan.

Roof is pitched natural slate with blue/black clay ridge tiles over brick corbelled eaves. Walls are random rubble with fieldstone quoins; gables are roughcast rendered. Windows are metal casements with stone lintels.

Principal elevation faces south; at left, segmental rebated carriage arch with rubble voussoirs (brick rebate) is flanked at each side by vertically-sheeted timber half-doors; large opening (now blocked) with sandstone sill at first floor; at right, differing stonework separated by quoins; segmental rebated carriage arch flanked at right by vertically-sheeted timber door with rubble voussoirs surmounted by single window at first floor.

West gable is blank; abutted at ground floor by rubble outbuilding with flat corrugated metal roof (built into topography of site).

North elevation is accessed only at first floor; at left, square-headed opening supported by timber lintel containing vertically-sheeted timber door flanked at right by window (concrete block walling below); at centre, vertically-sheeted timber half-door supported by timber lintel.

East gable is blank.

Setting

Set perpendicular to road at entrance to farm, bounded to road at west by rendered walling; three-bay two-storey rendered farmhouse to east; range of rendered outbuildings and recent barns and farm stores to south.

Historical information

The outbuilding is first shown on the second edition OS map of 1852. Further outbuildings present to the west on the 1833 map appear to have survived.

The Townland Valuation lists a ‘house and offices’, which is occupied by James Alexander and valued at £3.13s.Griffith’s Valuation records the site as a ‘house, offices and land’, is occupied by Susan Bird and leased from Captain Archdall. The building valuation is initially £3.15s and is revised to £4 at a date not given. It is possible that this relates to the addition of the outbuilding.

Valuation Revisions list changes in occupier among the Alexander family and later to William Henderson in 1883.

Evaluation

A detached multi-bay two-storey outbuilding, built c.1850, located to the west side of Mullagh Road. The building is sited within the topography of the site and retains good rubble stonework, brick detailing and timber lintels. However, it is of a common type and does not meet the statutory and policy tests as a building of special architectural or historic interest in its own right.
