The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Relatively large municipal cemetery laid out c.1900. The cemetery is set on a rising ground between the Cemetery and Milltown Roads.
The cemetery ground is roughly triangular in plan, bounded by the Milltown Road to the W, the Cemetery Road to the NE and the grounds of Strabane Grammar School to the S. It is partly enclosed by a rendered wall and partly by an embankment with a low stone retaining wall. It is entered from Cemetery Road, via a relatively narrow vehicle gateway with square rendered pyramidal-capped piers and relatively plain wrought-iron gates. Within the cemetery itself the grave plots are laid out around a regular grid of tarmac-covered pathways. The graves themselves have a variety of headstones and surrounds, with little degree of uniformity in evidence.
Historical information
This cemetery is shown (as ‘Strabane Cemetery’) on the OS map of 1905. It was probably laid out c.1900, by the newly formed Strabane Urban District Council, to supersede the old graveyard off Patrick Street / Church Street.
