Exterior description and setting

A single-span road bridge, built c.1850, carrying Ganvaughan Road over Killen Burn. Roughly coursed rubble abutments, spandrels and parapets; ashlar sandstone string-course to carriageway level; dressed rockfaced sandstone coping to parapet is rounded to ends. Single segmental-headed arch with dressed rockfaced voussoirs. Arch soffits are cement rendered.

The carriageway is approximately 5m wide. Parapet wall continues beyond abutments to rounded end; timber stile to north-east.

The bridge is located on a rural road to the west of Castlederg village, where Killen Burn flows into River Derg; riverbank bounded to either side by wire fencing and hedging.

Historical information

A bridge appears, uncaptioned, on the 1833 OS map spanning Killen Burn, a small river crossed by the Castlederg to Fermanagh road. However, the present bridge appears to date from the mid-nineteenth century as evidenced by its sophisticated stonework and ornamentation.

On the 1853 edition the bridge is captioned ‘Glashagh Br’. By the third edition of 1905 a bridge has also appeared over the Derg River nearby.

A single-span bridge, built c.1850, carrying Glasvaughan Road over Killen Burn. This attractive bridge is well proportioned and detailed, with ornate dressings such as coping and voussoirs in contrasting stonework. The bridge has a unspoiled rural setting and contributes positively to the local landscape.
