Exterior description and setting

This is a detached single-storey hall ‘Ballinderry Hibernian Hall, built in 1915. It is rectangular in plan with a later small single-storey entrance porch to the side SE elevation. There is a single-storey flat-roofed return to the NE side. The hall is set on the Ballinderry Bridge Road to the South of Ballinderry.

The front elevation is gable ended faces onto the Ballinderry Bridge Road. There is a datestone to the gable which is embossed with ‘BALLINDERRY HIBERNIAN HALL 1915’. The projecting entrance porch is located to the left. The porch is pitched with tiles to the roof. There is a single square-headed timber sheeted door to the front Southwest and side Northwest elevation. There are decorative timber fascia boards to the porch gable.

The side Southwest elevation is four windows in width. Windows are square-headed with brick surrounds and voussoirs. Windows have been boarded up. There is a square-headed door; this door has a matching brick surround. The return is visible to the left of the side elevation. There is a metal ventilator located to the ground level of the side elevation. It is inscribed ‘THE SANATORIUM VENTILATOR’

The side Northeast elevation is matching with similar windows. Windows have also been boarded up.

The rear Northwest elevation is gable-ended. It is roughcast render, and is partially obscured by the rear return.

External walls are snecked and rubble stone with brick quoins stones to corners. There is a projecting moulded yellow brick corbelled eaves course. The roof is pitched with artificial tiles laid in a fish scale pattern, with pierced clay ridge tiles to the roof. There are decorative carved timber fascia boards to the gable ends. There are yellow brick chimneys to the roof, one at each gable-end. Chimneys are partially fallen in. Rainwater goods are cast-iron.

Returns

The return to the rear Northwest is flat-roofed. There are square-headed windows at high level. Windows have protective metal security grills and are set on concrete sills. There is an external door to the South, adjacent to the side elevation. The door is square-headed with timber boarding. It is set on a concrete step.

Setting

The hall is set to the West side of Ballinderry Bridge Road within Ballinderry townland. It is located to the East side of Cookstown.

Historical information

The date stone states that this hall was built in 1915. The building is shown on the OS map of 1937 (revised 1929) as ‘Ballinderry Hibernian Hall.

Evaluation

This is a detached single-storey hall ‘Ballinderry Hibernian Hall, built in 1915. It is nicely proportioned and substantially in original condition but of a late date and not n outstanding example of a community hall. Alterations such as the porch and flat roofed extension detract from its overall appearance,.
