Exterior description and setting

A detached single-storey multiple bay Parish Hall, built 1956. It is rectangular in plan with a pitched roof and gable ends. A square flat-roofed porch with chamfered corners projects from the front gable, two flat-roofed extensions project to the rear.

External walls are brick to the front porch and gable, and dashed render to the remainder. The roof is slate and pitched to the main roof. Rainwater goods are cast iron. There are two small square ventilation monitors with pavilion roofs to the ridge of the main roof.

The front Southwest gable elevation is red brick with the porch to the centre. Above this is a tall metal-framed rectangular window with soldier course over flanked by two smaller similar windows, creating a Palladian window effect. Above this is in the apex of the gable is a louvered ventilation panel. Between the ventilation panel and the windows is a carved stone plaque which reads “Tamlaght Parish Hall 1956”. Above the ventilation panel is a projecting shoe for a flagpole. There are parapet concrete eaves on projecting concrete shoulders. The porch is red brick as before with a central square-headed door opening and replacement timber double doors. There is a narrow rectangular metal-framed window to each side of the doorway, and one to each side of the porch.

The side Northwest elevation is dashed render with five symmetrically positioned square-headed metal-framed windows with rendered surrounds. The flat-roofed extensions, one behind the other, are in line with this elevation with one window as before.

The rear Northeast gable elevation is dashed render with Palladian window and ventilation panel as before. The rearmost extension has a single long casement window on this elevation.

The side Southeast elevation is similar to the northwest, with a square-headed door opening towards the rear of the building.

Setting:

The hall faces Bridgend Road, with a small car park in front. There are a set of gates with curving red brick side walls, square piers and decorative iron gates to the road. The side and rear boundaries are a mixture of hedges and wire fences. The immediate neighbours are two-storey houses with front gardens, of a similar age. The Parish Hall is remote from St. Luke’s Church, to which it belongs.

Historical information

The date stone on the front gable tells us that this (Church of Ireland) parish hall was built in 1956. The identity of the architect is not known.

Evaluation

A detached single-storey multiple bay Parish Hall, built 1956. This is typical of public buildings of the period, plain and functional but with a certain ‘stylistic honesty’. It in original condition both inside and out and is of some interest for its social function as well as for its architectural style but not of special interest.
