Exterior description and setting

A 7 bay long former railway station converted to dwelling, with 1 and 2 storeys.

The entrance elevation from N end consists of single storey bay with modern window, hipped slated roof, roughcast rendering, painted gable similar without window and abuts a 2 storey section, 3 bays long. Centre bay has a projecting hipped entrance porch with modern window on each side and same on first floor, wall roughcast rendered, with painted quoins, ½ round metal gutter, downpipe, slated roof, chimney stack brick centred on roof and another on S gable, which has a setback. The next 3 bays are single storey each bay with a pair of arched tall windows, 4 pane double hung sliding sash, walls roughcast rendering, painted with quoins, slated roof. To S gable an open shed with corrugated asbestos roof supported by trussed and bracketed purlins and timber columns. This shed abuted against a prefabricated vertical and horizontal timber sheathed store, 3 bays long with 3 no, 9 pane widows. Roof corrugated iron, good overhang.

On the former platform side from N 1st bay as before, 3, 2 storey part, with back door, 2 modern windows and 2 windows at 1st floor. The 3 bay single storey part becomes 4 bays on platform side with a 3 bay arcade to a covered area, the roof of which is supported or chamfered timber columns with curved brackets, top part of arcade sheeted with vertical timbering. Several 4 panelled doors in arcade to various rooms including ticket office and waiting rooms. The last bay has 2 no. arched 4 pane double hung sliding sash windows. Walls rendered and painted.

The open shed or covered space has a rubble stone wall 1500mm high with wooden gate for exit from and to platform for goods. Prefabricated store as before except there is an access door.

The dwelling house is the former Moneymore Railway Station, platform retained on both sides of 4 tracks (no longer there) with a large storage shed opposite dwelling. Shed not within property which extends approximately the length of the station building, across to the goods platform and of course the approach forecourt (see HB09/06/052B).

Historical information

The railway line to Moneymore was part of the Midland line branch from Antrim to Cookstown via Magherafelt. The station was opened in October 1856. In 1877 railway improvements mean that Moneymore had a direct connection to Dublin via Dungannon. The line ceased in 1953 and the last station master was Robert Neill who was in the post 8 years. The present owners purchased the station from a Frank Ross and converted it into a dwelling house. The structures to the N of station were removed and the main stations building altered retaining the ticket office, waiting rooms, goods access and store. The building originally would have been redbrick faced.

An interesting conversion of former mid 19th cent. railway station to a dwelling house and though much has been altered, much has been retained externally and internally of the form and detail of the building and its function.
