Exterior description and setting

A 3 bay wide, 1½ storey semi detached terrace cottage, stone built, gabled.

The street elevation consists of a central framed door with shallow plain fanlight, on each side 2 pane double hung sliding sash windows. The front wall is faced with ashlar sandstone, ½ round gutter, single downpipe, gutter stops against a moulded small sandstone kneeler against which sandstone bargestones stop. Roof natural slates, stone chimney stacks at each end of ridge. Forms a semi-detached pair. Unfortunately the other part has had its walls smooth rendered and painted. The gable wall has an arched double hung sliding sash window lighting the attic. 3 steps ascend to front door and the windows have painted cills.

Historical information

This semi-detached cottage and its neighbour together with others were erected in 1840 to complete the terrace of houses in Hammond Street erected earlier. It is most likely some existing cabins were demolished to allow their erection. The builder was Bowen. The present owner has resided in No. 35 all her life. The O.S. Memoirs records “Hammond Street …… Its eastern end consists of very nice 1 storey cottages built of sandstone, in the neatest and most substantial and uniform manner. They are chiefly occupied by trademen or labourers”.

Evaluation

A tradesman or labourer cottage erected by the Drapers Company in1832 and designed by W.J.Booth. It has the best preserved front of the cottages erected by the Company in Hammond Street.
