Exterior description and setting

A single-arched masonry bridge carrying the main driveway to Lissan House over the Lissan Water river.

Built of rubble stonework with roughly squared voussoirs to the segmental arch on the east face, but more crisply cut voussoirs on the west side. Copings are of rough stone and the soffit of the vault is of rubble stonework. The carriageway is slightly humped, with grassy verges.

SETTING

The bridge stands within the demesne of Lissan House, with steep banks surrounded by trees and scrub. The approach roads run parallel with the river before turning into the bridge.

Historical information

The precise date of the is not known but it appears on the OS map of 1833, and may be presumed to date from the 18th century.

Evaluation

This is a bridge of typically proportioned hump-backed form, masonry-built of robust construction, which retains its original features on both faces and stands in a pleasant rural setting. It is of indeterminate date, but presumably dating from some time in the 18th century at least, and possibly dating from the late 17th century. As an unspoiled and picturesque example of its type, still in everyday use, it is of considerable local interest, but also has enhanced value due to its association with the development of Lissan House demesne, forming part of an interesting and valuable group of buildings within it.
