Exterior description and setting

A single storey, two-bay, direct entry house extended to three-bay by incorporating a contiguous outbuilding and also adding a compartment at the rear of the right hand bedroom.

The house, that faces north, is sited a short distance to the east off a minor road that proceeds in a south-westerly direction off the road from Magherafelt to Desertmartin about two miles from the former town.

The roofs that were thatched until about 1955 are now covered with corrugated iron with the exception of the kitchen where the material is corrugated asbestos.

The walls are constructed of stone with a plastered finish at front and sides and with the addition of a black base at the front.

At the rear the extension is of rubble stone with remains of harling. The entrance door is missing and the right hand jamb has been built up using brickwork.

To the right the base of the wall, of rubble stone with remains of plaster, has concrete block above. A vertically sliding window, with moulded sash stops, is glassless.

Beyond this the walling is pierced by a three pane metal framed window, with a top opener at centre, lighting the second bedroom and finally a metal window of three horizontal panes above an opening built up with concrete blocks into the first byre.

Moving down the slope the suite comprising the original outbuildings are of reduced height compared with the two upper bays and the roof of the final byre reduces still further.
A small window positioned left of centre in the right (east) gable was used to give light to an upper chamber now redundant.

On the front elevation from the right (east) the sequence of openings is as follows: -
A ledged and sheeted timber door.
A two-pane metal framed window with a top opener in the right hand section. There is no sill.
A ledged and sheeted timber door.
A ledged and plank timber door with a sheet of plywood covering the lower part.
A ledged, braced and plank timber door that does not extend to the full height.
A ledged and sheeted timber door.

Historical information

Deeds in possession of the owner record transfer of the lands from the Honourable the Irish Society to the Salters’ Company in 1666. After this the progression of occupiers terminates with the purchase of the property in 1942 by the present owner’s father.

The present building does not appear on the OS map of 1832 but is shown in existing form on the revision of 1854.

On the 1832 map three small buildings within the site are assumed to be earlier structures that have been replaced by the present development.

Evaluation

A single storey, three-bay, direct entry house with contiguous outbuildings.
The group presents a fine appearance as it makes its way down the slightly sloping ground to the west. It is also sited to advantage along a short street that proceeds from a secondary road and has a small stream on the side opposite to the house.
