Exterior description and setting

Rotary type pump. Column splay shaped with fluted decorations. The cap has fluted decorations with a pointed finial. This pump has a spout lug but no pedestal. It is in a prominent roadside location.

Historical information

Pump cited here on 1906 and 1926 OS 25 inch maps (PRONI OS 10/5/42/6/1 and 2). May therefore predate 1907. Further particulars in EHS Report ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’ by Fred Hamond, January 1997, Pump No 5.

Good example of a rotary type water pump in a prominent position in the heart of Castledawson. This type is rare and a reminder of the time when drinking water was only available in the street.
