Exterior description and setting

The house ids located about two miles north of Maghera a short distance off the main road between Maghera and Swatragh.A single storey, three-bay, direct entry house with thatch under corrugated iron over the two left-hand (south-west) bays. Parapet copings are of concrete.A corbelled red brick chimneystack rises over the left-hand (south-west) gable, on the opposite gable the chimney lacks corbelling and the remains of a similar feature serve the kitchen hearth.Rainwater goods are of light metal with the gutter supported on drive-in hooks.

The wall structure is of rubble stone either exposed or finished with harling

The entrance is protected by a lean-to porch now roofless and without a door. There are unglazed openings on the front and on the left-hand (south-west) side. That at the front retains a metal frame.

To the left of the porch there is an unglazed timber framed widow and to the right (north-east) a top-hung 3/3 unglazed metal-framed window is followed by a plain vertically-sliding window with the outer sash missing and the inner sash unglazed. Sash stops are curved.

The window opening to the left of the porch is not provided with a sill, that to the right of the porch retains a deep stone sill and the final opening has a narrow stone sill.

Attached to the right-hand gable of the house there is a concrete block structure now doorless and with an unglazed window aperture.On the opposite gable there is a stone structure with collapsed cast iron roof.

Historical information

The house appears on the OS map of 1831-32 together with a small outbuilding to the north-east.

The 1853 OS map shows a larger outbuilding sited closer to the house on the same side.
These outbuildings are not now apparent on site.

The owner confirms that the corrugated iron covering was applied either in the late 1940s or in the early 1950s.

The original layout is unchanged and the roof structures over the kitchen and over the bedroom are of considerable interest.
