Exterior description and setting

A pig house built of basalt rubble, comprising a small gabled building containing two chambers with two low walled brick-paved enclosures in front of it. Main entrance front faces east. Roof of Bangor Blue slates in regular courses between gable upstands of cement; dark toned ridge tiles, impressed ‘C. Davison & Co., Buckley, Flintshire’ in a shield motif. Small rectangular opening into each chamber. Basalt rubble boundary walling to enclosures at front and wing wall to rear on south side; basalt rock copings. South gable, outer faces of wing wall and boundary walling on south and east sides, all whitened. Small gates of flat ironwork to each of two openings in front boundary wall of enclosure.

Setting: the building stands alongside a driveway into a farm close to the centre of the village; gravel path to front and side; rear backs onto a field.

Historical information

Appears on OS map of 1902 (revised 1921). Date of building not recorded precisely but probably dates from late 19th century.

Evaluation

A structure which has the appearance of being an example of an ‘improved’ or ‘recommended’ type of small farm building which appears to be completely intact. Its presence adds to the vernacular charm which characterises the village.
